Claude

We included each of the big three frontier labs (i.e., OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google) on the list of 20 products we wanted to study this year because we wanted to understand the approach they are taking in K–12 education, given their widespread use, and because most of the other products use these models in their products, so they have cross-cutting impact.

Here is what we know about Claude’s use in schools:

  • Claude restricts use to individuals who are 18+. Minors are strictly prohibited from creating accounts by Claude’s terms of use, and Anthropic actively monitors chats and revokes accounts it suspects are being used by minors. It is not designed for K–12 students to use.
  • Some, but relatively few teens report using Claude. Some children report using Claude with their parents.
  • Anthropic released Claude for Teachers in July 2026.
    • K–12 educators in the US get free access to premium Claude, including Claude Code and Cowork. Claude for Teachers is also aligned to Learning Commons, which supplies academic standards across all 50 states and learning competencies beneath each standard. It’s also trained to reference OpenSciEd and IM v.360 from Illustrative Mathematics.
    • Claude for Teachers is for individual educators.
    • Claude recently released a dedicated enterprise account for Schools and Districts.
  • Claude for Education is Anthropic's higher education offering, which is designed as an institutional plan rather than an individual product. It has three components: Learning mode, which guides students' reasoning rather than providing answers; campus access agreements; and academic partnerships including Internet2 and Instructure to embed Claude in Canvas LMS. Anthropic routes K–12 teachers away from the higher education product explicitly.

Because Claude does not have K–12 student-facing offerings, we are not doing a full product profile in this round. We will conduct a deeper dive into Claude for Teachers during Year 2 of the tour, alongside other teacher-only-facing products.
